LIMERICK’S season-opening McGrath Cup game has been postponed for a second time and will now take place on Sunday next.
The first round game against Waterford IT is now scheduled for Fitzgerald Park in Kilmallock at 2pm.
The game was initially fixed for the south Limerick venue last Sunday, but the weather forced the game to be switched to Foynes.
Ultimately the game was postponed and re-fixed for the Gaelic Grounds tonight until the Munster Council made the decision to change the game to Sunday, January 10.
The game will kick-start Mickey Ned O’Sullivan’s fifth year in charge on Shannonside making his the second longest serving inter-county football manager behind Tyrone’s Mickey Harte.
If Limerick are victorious they will be back in action on Sunday week, January 17 with Cork IT awaiting in the quarter-finals of the early season competition.
Ballysteen’s Conor Ranahan is selected to make his first appearance for the county senior side.
With the long-serving Sean Kiely retired, Conor Ranahan has been named in goals with Mungret’s Barry Moran among the subs.
Another making his first start is St. Patrick’s John Mullane.
John Mullane was introduced as a sub against Meath last Summer in the All-Ireland Qualifiers, but tomorrow night will be his first competitive start for the seniors.
Elsewhere the new-look Limerick senior hurlers commence their 2010 preparations tonight when the understrength panel meet for a training session under Justin McCarthy.
McCarthy and his selectors, Brian Ryan, Liam Garvey and new-comer John Tuohy, were dealt a fresh blow on New Year’s Eve when a further four players withdrew from the panel - Gavin O’Mahony, Tom Condon, Denis Moloney and Stephen Walsh.
The management team are now left with just six members of the 2009 panel - Paul Browne (Bruff), Paudie McNamara (Murroe-Boher), David Breen (Na Piarsaigh), Bryan O’Sullivan (Kilmallock), Graeme Mulcahy (Kilmallock) and Dave Moloney (Blackrock).
It is understood that a trial game was to take place over the weekend, but was subsequently postponed because of a bereavement.
