O’Donovan returns to Munster

NIALL O’Donovan is to return to the Munster management set-up as manager of the province’s A team programme.
O’Donovan’s part-time management role will see him oversee Munster A’s British and Irish Cup campaign.

Last season’s British and Irish Cup team manager Mick Galwey has been appointed as squad advisor with the province’s senior team.
O’Donovan has enjoyed a distinguished coaching career.
As coach to Shannon O’Donovan led them to AIB All-Ireland League title wins in 1994, ‘95 and ‘96 and to a further title as the club’s Director of Rugby in 1997.
A widely acknowledged line-out and forwards expert, he was assistant coach to the Munster team for five years when they twice reached the Heineken Cup final. He joined the Ireland management team in December 2001 as forwards coach and the former Munster number eight continued in that role until 2008.
Munster will hope to build on their opening round bonus point win over Aironi Rugby when they travel to Murrayfield to take on Edinburgh this Friday. Kick-off is at 7.05pm and the game will be televised live on TG4.
Munster’s victory over Aironi last Saturday ended a four-game losing run in all competitions. The Munstermen have not won outside Ireland in the Magners League since a trip to the Llanelli Scarlets on September 19 last year.
Edinburgh’s only victory over Munster in their last seven meetings was a 12-7 win at Murrayfield in round six last season. Munster’s record at Murrayfield is an excellent one, with the two-time Magners League champions winning five of their six meetings with the Scots.
Meanwhile former Shannon and Munster star John Lacey has been appointed to the ERC Referee Panel for the Heineken Cup. Lacey, who as on duty at the IRB Junior World Championship in Argentina this summer, will take charge of Northampton Saints against Castres Olympique in round one of the Heineken Cup on Friday, October 8.
The former Shannon and Munster player scored four tries in six Heineken Cup appearances during the 1997-98 tournament.
