BRUFF referee George Clancy has been appointed to take charge of this season’s European Challenge Cup final between Northampton Saints and Bourgoin at the Twickenham Stoop on Friday, May 22.
Clancy was promoted to the IRB’s High Performance panel in November and took charge of France’s RBS Six Nations Championship clash with Scotland at the Stade de France earlier this year.
Winner of the Munster Referee of the Year award in 2007, George Clancy refereed the Churchill Cup final two years ago at Twickenham and joined Irish colleagues Alain Rolland and Alan Lewis on the IRB’s International Referee Panel last season. Clancy has also been appointed to take charge of two of the All-Blacks internationals this summer.
The Limerickman will officiate of New Zealand’s clash with France in Dunedin on June 13 and their meeting with Italy in Christchurch two weeks later.
Another Limerick referee, Peter Fitzgibbon, who was recently added to the International Referee Panel, will be the fourth official on duty for the Northampton Saints v Bourgoin Challenge Cup final tie.
Having started refereeing in September 2000, George Clancy has gone onto to referee at the U-19 RWC 2005 (South Africa) and the U-21 RWC 2006 (France). To date he has officiated at the Uruguay v USA World Cup qualifier, over a dozen Heineken Cup games, two Challenge Cup quarter finals, as well as the last game in Lansdowne Road- Leinster v Ulster in front of a capacity crowd. At a national level he has refereed the inaugural AIB Cup (2006), the U-20 AIL final (2004), and the AIL Division 3 Final (2005).
